This is an important 16th century oil on panel from the Renaissance period, in the manner of Jacopo Tintoretto, one of the great Venetian painters of his day. His themes were often the Virgin Mary and the life of Christ. The painting here portrays Mary holding the Christ child and probably flanked by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara. The baby Jesus is holding up two fingers, as if to bless the figure in prayer at his side. The painting is unsigned and has had restoration work done on it, and it is housed in a 19th century European exhibition carved gilded frame.
The overall size is 41 1/8 x 51 3/4 in. wide and the sight size is 25 x 35 1/2 in. wide.
