Jean‑Baptiste‑Camille Corot (1796-1875) was a seminal French artist of the 19th century, born in Paris in 1796 and celebrated for his poetic landscape paintings and etchings. Trained initially in the neoclassical tradition, Corot made extended trips to Italy and traveled widely in France, developing a style that blended classical composition with a sensitive handling of natural light and atmosphere—qualities that later helped bridge traditional landscape painting and the plein‑air innovations of the Impressionists. Though long regarded as an amateur by critics early in his career, he gained recognition around mid‑century and became a central figure in the Barbizon School, influencing generations of artists with his soft palettes, contemplative scenes, and mastery of tonal harmony until his death in 1875.
