Makoto Takigawa (20th/21st Century) Japanese, Oil on Board. Signed and dated 2002 on back. Depicts an abstract landscape of a rising sun against a red sky above green rolling hills. Depth: 2 in. Size: 30 X 48 1/4 in. Although there is a signature and date on the back, there is no way to determine where this piece was painted. The Rising Sun Emblem of the Imperial Japanese Navy gained popularity during the Meiji Restoration. Given the trauma associated with the emblem in the wake of World War II, the positioning of a white circle against a red sky instead of a red circle against a white sky likely represents an inversion of the flag's original intent, and may symbolize healing, sorrow, or the lasting damage of a dark chapter in the history of the Japanese Empire.
