Makonde Tree of Life Wood Sculpture.
Dark wood with figures carved in high relief. Stands on a lighter wood base.
The Makonde are an ethnic group from Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Their Tree of Life sculptures were especially sought after in the 1950s and 60s. The sculptures represent the family unit and are essentially family trees. They depict family members from past and present holding each other up and growing taller and stronger through mutual support. An exceptional example of Makonde artistry.
