David “Mac” Stevenson was born in Ogden, Utah in 1942. While at Ben Lomond High School he received an art scholarship to attend Weber State University, obtaining his Bachelors in Art Education in 1968. He spread his education out over many years in order to marry his high school sweetheart, Ann Brunetti, and help her raise their six children. After teaching art for one year he enrolled at Brigham Young University, where he received his Masters of Fine Arts in Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture. He became an art teacher for the Ogden City School District, teaching at various high schools and junior high schools before landing back at Ben Lomond, where he taught for twenty-six years. In 1994 and 1997 Mac was chosen by Utah State University as the Utah High School Art Teacher of the Year. During his last twelve years at Ben Lomond Mac instructed Advanced Placement Art, and boasted an 86% pass rate on their test scores, the highest ratio in the state. He was honored as one of the “Top 100 Artists” in the state in 2002, and received the Mayor’s Award in 2009 for outstanding contributions to the arts of Ogden. After retiring from teaching in 2012 he focused completely on being a practicing artist, working in oil, watercolor, gouache, pastel, and mixed media in both traditional and abstract subjects. Over the years he has had one man shows at Brigham Young University, Weber State University, Salt Lake Community College, Eccles Community Art Center, the Myra Powell Art Gallery, the Layton Utah Heritage Museum, the Bountiful-Davis Art Center, and the Gallery at the Station. He is also a charter member of an artist cooperative, Gallery 25, originating in Ogden. His artwork can be found in private collections in many states as well as Mexico, Canada, Germany and England, and he shows no sign of slowing down despite the passing of his wife in 2022 and the difficulties of COVID-19, still inspiring younger artists into his 80s.
