Àlvar Suñol Munoz-Ramos—commonly known simply as Àlvar—is a Spanish painter, sculptor, lithographer, and graphic artist, born January 29, 1935, in Montgat, a Catalan fishing village near Barcelona. He began oil painting at age twelve and, by seventeen, was admitted to the prestigious Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Jorge in Barcelona. At eighteen, he won the City of Barcelona Young Painter’s Prize, and his winning work was acquired for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona. In 1957, he held his first solo exhibition in Barcelona and earned a scholarship from the Institut Français to study in Paris, where he later exhibited alongside artists like Picasso, Miró, and Dalí. Àlvar’s style emphasizes mastery of technique and traditional values—what he called el oficio—drawing inspiration from Renaissance masters, Romanesque Catalan art, and modern perspectives to explore themes of time, human experience, interiors, and psychological depth across oil, watercolor, lithography, sculpture, ceramics, and public murals. His work has been exhibited in more than 40 museums worldwide and displayed in over 95 galleries across Europe, Asia, and the United States, with major retrospectives mounted in Girona during the mid-2010s.
