Lous Durot (Born 1939) French, Surrealist Saint Siege Chair. Sculptural, surrealist chair by Louis Durot, crafted from white polyurethane foam to resemble a pair of disembodied, upturned legs that form a functional seat.
Size: 16 x 27 x 30 in.
Louis Durot (born 1939) is a French designer, chemical engineer, and sculptor whose work is defined by a bold, playful intersection of organic chemistry and Pop Art. After studying mathematics and engineering, he worked in nuclear metrology before turning his expertise toward polymers, eventually becoming an internationally recognized authority on polyurethane. In the late 1960s, he assisted the renowned sculptor César, helping to stabilize polyurethane foam into permanent artistic forms. Durot is most famous for his "functional sculptures"—pieces like the Spirale chair, tongue-shaped lounges, and lip-shaped settees—that use vivid colors and fluid, biomorphic shapes to challenge the boundaries between furniture and fine art.
