Louis Berthommé Saint-André (1905–1977) was a French painter, illustrator, lithographer, engraver, and ceramist known for his vibrant figurative work in the 20th century. Born on February 4, 1905, in Barbery, France, he grew up in Saintes and initially trained in architecture before studying under Fernand Cormon and Jean‑Paul Laurens at the École des Beaux‑Arts in Paris. Saint‑André won a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français and the prestigious Abd‑el‑Tif Prize, which enabled him to work in Algiers, where the light and landscape influenced his luminous style. His oeuvre includes portraits, Algerian scenes, boudoir and nude studies, landscapes, and numerous illustrations—often erotic—for literary works, reflecting a mix of classical training and modernist sensibilities. He also exhibited widely in major French salons, participated in the French Resistance during World War II, and his works are held in public collections in France and Algeria. (fr.wikipedia.org)
