Compagnie des Montres Longines, Francillon S.A. (Longines) is a Swiss luxury watchmaker founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. After his partners retired in 1846, Agassiz led the company until ill health prompted him to pass control to his nephew Ernest Francillon, who modernized production and studied American watch styles, making Longines highly sought after in Europe by the 1890s. Economic challenges and imitators led the company to downsize and produce wristwatches starting in 1927, later acquiring the A. Wittnauer Company in New York after World War II while maintaining separate factories. In 1983 Longines became a subsidiary of the Swiss Swatch Group, celebrating the 100th anniversary of its winged hourglass logo in 1989, the oldest unchanged active trademark registered with WIPO. Swatch later repositioned Longines as a less-expensive segment while selling Wittnauer in 2001, and Longines continues to manufacture watches at its original Swiss factory today.
