Long Persian Bakshaish Wool Rug.

Bakshaish rugs and carpets are from the village of Bakshaish in northwest Iran roughly 30 miles east of Tabriz, and are a particular type of rug that is often used as a tapestry for their distinctive looks. They are heavily influenced both by their large neighboring city, a hub of rugmaking for centuries, and the varied nomadic tribes that have traveled the region since pre-historic times. Many of their works are abstract adaptations of old Persian motifs, and are known both for having a broad field with tight geometric patterns as well as a highly-sought variant that often incorporates a broad empty red field in a trapezoidal shape. Most commonly Bakshaish rugs utilize curvilinear medallion designs, transforming classical floral and animal motifs into more abstract drawings, similar to Caucasian tribal rugs. In the late 19th Century the designs produced in Bakshaish carpets began to shift and coalesce significantly into what they look like today thanks to an influx of weavers from Arak who were fleeing the city due to civil unrest. Their descendants continue to produce beautiful works that collectors around the world seek out.
