The kimono (literally "thing to wear") is the traditional Japanese garment and national dress, distinguished by its wrapped-front, rectangular body, and square sleeves, worn left side over right unless the wearer is deceased. This garment is constructed from a long, narrow bolt of cloth and is worn with a broad sash called an obi, with variations existing for different genders, seasons, and levels of formality. Though now most commonly seen at formal events and summer festivals (where the informal yukata is popular), the kimono has experienced revivals and remains a revered symbol of Japanese culture.
