Born in Rotterdam, Holland in 1921, Loet Vanderveen's childhood home was near the zoo where he spent most of his time. Vanderveen developed a love of animals which later became the subject of the majority of his sculptures. After World War II he lived in Zurich, London, and then moved to New York City where he studied under Fong Chow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There he learned the art of glazes and patinas. By the 1960s, Vanderveen moved to California where he established a studio-home on the coast at Big Sur. There he continued to work in bronze, creating animal figures in their naturalistic poses.
