Livio Seguso (Born 1930) Italian, Murano Art Glass Vase. Signed on base.

Size: 7 x 7 x 15 1/2 in.

Livio Seguso was born in 1930 on Murano, the famous glassmaking island near Venice. He was the son of famed glass artist Archimede Seguso, and began his relationship with glass studying under his father when he was 11, the age Archimede had started exploring glassmaking himself. After turning 18 Livio traveled around Europe and the Americas, studying sculptural forms and visiting countless glass studios to observe their processes and inspirations. In the late 1960s he returned to Murano to work with his father, but eventually struck out on his own in the late 1970s as he found the Seguso Factory process too restrictive. Although he continued to work in Murano throughout his life, he frequently traveled to be a glass artist in residence at colleges and craft schools all over the world, imparting elements of the Murano traditions into more avant garde and modern designs and influencing new generations of glassmakers. In his later years he began to incorporate other materials such as steel, stone, marble, granite, and wood into his works, concentrating more and more on geometric patterns and abstraction. Now, nearly 100, he continues to sketch new designs which a dedicated team of artisans help him bring to life from his home studio in Murano.
