Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald (1890-1956) was a Canadian painter, educator, and the only Winnipeg-based member invited into the Group of Seven, known for his meticulous, contemplative landscapes and urban scenes. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, FitzGerald was largely self-directed as an artist, developing a precise, structured style that emphasized pattern, atmosphere, and the quiet geometry of gardens, backyards, and prairie architecture. His paintings balance observation with subtle abstraction, revealing an intense sensitivity to light and spatial rhythm. Alongside his studio practice, he played a major role in Canadian art education as a longtime instructor and later principal at the Winnipeg School of Art. FitzGerald’s work is celebrated for its intellectual rigor and poetic restraint, offering an intimate, modernist vision of everyday Canadian environments.
