Lino Tagliapietra was born August 10th, 1934 on the island of Murano, and grew up to become a world-renowned maestro of the glassblowing world. He began his training at age 12 as an apprentice to Archimede Seguso and achieved the rank of maestro by 25, later serving as artistic director for several major Italian factories. In 1979 he went to teach American artists at the Pilchuck Glass School, and his collaborations with Dale Chihuly became a cornerstone of the international studio glass movement, blending traditional Italian techniques with modern abstract experimentation. Tagliapietra transitioned to a full-time independent artist in the 1980s, with his first solo show at the Traver Gallery in Seattle in 1990. In 2021 Tagliapietra announced his retirement after close to 80 years of visionary glass blowing, but he continues to teach and push the boundaries of art glass, working on computer-aided designs with the MIT Glass Lab and serving on the board of directors for several glassmaking organizations.
