Founded in 1905 in Martins Ferry, Ohio by brothers Frank L. Fenton and John W. Fenton, The Fenton Art Glass Company initially painted glass blanks but began manufacturing its own products after moving to a new factory in Williamstown, West Virginia. Frank became the chief designer after John left, influenced by Tiffany and Steuben, and introduced Carnival Glass. The company produced practical items during the Great Depression, and its Hobnail pattern, introduced in 1940, became a top seller for decades. By 1970, Fenton began marking its “Original Formula” Carnival Glass. Despite continuous family involvement for three generations, the company faced difficulties in the early 2000s, leading to a closure announcement in 2007. The company finally shut down in 2011 due to the Great Recession. The factory was later demolished for a school in 2017, but a small jewelry operation continued, and today, some art glass is produced using original molds elsewhere, while jewelry and hand-painted items are sold at a nearby gift shop.
