This book is titled "Letters And Social Aims", by Ralph Waldo Emerson and published in Boston by James R. Osgood in 1876, according to the title page. The book has gilt lettering and the gilt colophon of Osgood on the spine, terracotta covers with bevelled edges, dark brown endpapers, the title page, the copyright page dated 1875, followed by the Contents page and 314 pages of text.
The book also has the N on page 209, and BAL says copies with that mark were probably the first printed, and page 308 has the uncorrected points of issue that make this a first edition. Page 308 has "inviolate" and "choices", changed in the second and third printings to "inviolable" and "choice". 5000 copies were printed on December 15, 1875, the same day the book was advertised in a Boston newspaper as first being published, so this copy is probably one of the 5000 copies originally printed. The book is 8vo. and measures 7 1/4 x 4 7/8 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages, light bumps on the heels and crown, very light rubbing at the tips, and the tips are slightly turned in. An attractive copy of this first edition by Emerson, with all the points of issue called for.
