Artist Biography:
Leroy Almon (1938–1997) was an influential American folk artist known for his vibrant and expressive wood carvings and painted wood reliefs. Born in Tallapoosa, Georgia, and later moving to Ohio, Almon began his artistic journey under the mentorship of Elijah Pierce, a renowned woodcarver and preacher. Almon's works often depicted religious themes, social commentary, and African American cultural narratives, characterized by their vivid colors, intricate details, and dynamic compositions. His art was deeply rooted in his spirituality and community, reflecting both his personal beliefs and the broader cultural experiences of African Americans in the 20th century. Almon's contributions to folk art were widely recognized, leading to exhibitions in major galleries and museums, which celebrated his unique voice and the powerful storytelling embodied in his works.
