Leonard Baskin (1922–2000) was a prominent American sculptor, printmaker, and illustrator whose powerful figurative works focused deeply on themes of mortality, Judaism, and the human condition. In 1942, he founded the Gehenna Press, one of America's first fine art presses, where his stark black-and-white prints complemented the writings of poets like Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. A dedicated educator who taught at Smith College for two decades, Baskin earned international acclaim, with his works now held in major institutions worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.
