Lena Horne photograph by Al Stewart Lena Mary Calhoun Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010) was an American singer, actress, dancer, and civil rights activist. Her career spanned more than seventy years, appearing in film, television, and theatre. Horne joined the chorus of the Cotton Club at the age of sixteen and became a nightclub performer before moving to Hollywood. Horne advocated for human rights and took part in the March on Washington in August 1963. Returning to her roots as a nightclub performer and continued to work on television while releasing well-received record albums. Her recording of the “The Lady is a Tramp” is a quintessential contribution to Jazz music and her interpretation of the American songbook is both thrilling and unforgettable. According to Stewart, “Here is photo I took of Lena in 1966 during a rehearsal in Basin Street East for an upcoming television show in New York City.” Signed on mat and under photo.
