Len Gibbs was born on May 5th, 1929 in Cranbrook, British Columbia. An adventurous youth, he earned his pilot's license at the age of 16 and joined the navy right out of high school, serving on several ships including the Royal Navy submarine HMS Tallyho. After developing an interest in art to pass the time between ports, he went into advertising after leaving the Navy and eventually became the Creative Director and Vice President of a major Canadian agency. He left the business world in 1968 to devote his free time to painting, and became one of the most important Canadian hyper-realist artists with shows in London, New York, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, and Seattle. Gibbs passed away on August 12th, 2010, remembered for his stunning prints and larger-than-life persona that inspired numerous artists in his wake.
