Lemuel D. Eldred (1848–1921) was an American marine painter and etcher born and raised in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, near the important whaling port of New Bedford. He studied with the noted marine painter William Bradford, working with him in both Fairhaven and New York, and later established a successful studio in Boston. Eldred briefly studied at the Académie Julian in Paris around 1880 and traveled extensively through Europe, North Africa, and the coastal regions of New England, including Grand Manan and the Bay of Fundy. His paintings and etchings are distinguished by their detailed depictions of ships, harbors, fishermen, rocky coastlines, and atmospheric seascapes, reflecting his intimate familiarity with maritime life. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Boston Art Club, and his work is represented in collections including the National Gallery of Art, which holds his 1906 etching New Bedford Waterfront.
