Born in London, England on October 17th 1932, *Leighton-Jones has been creating paintings and prints for over 50 years. Major art publishers in Europe and the U.S.A have made his name synonymous with clowns, humor and satire. His artwork graces the walls and ceilings of stately homes throughout the world, and his most successful works have been published as prints in at least one hundred and forty two countries. He was appointed official artist to the Emmett Kelly Estate from 1986 to 1992 during which time he created over 300 drawings and paintings which are rapidly becoming collector/investment pieces.
In his drawings and paintings L-J strives to express an inner essence of mankind. Primarily a portrait painter, he is a modern romantic who expresses bathos and pathos often in the same picture. On many occasions the figure provides the sadness, and then the viewers, through their own interpretation, play an active role in creating the humor. Because he has developed a unique visual language and style, his artwork is instantly recognizable.
In a way this whole collection is concerned with the evocation of primitive responses such as joy, sorrow, laughter, contentment and compassion. The artist succeeds in making these qualities tangible by employing a language which is characterized by bold linear design, directness of subject matter, vividness, lyrical and poetic rhythms, and superb craftsmanship. If we participate fully as a viewer there is potential for awe and delight, no matter what our cultural or ethnic background.
