Sight Size: 9 x 12 1/2 in. #1171 . Lee Friedlander is became a well-known street photographers in the 1960s. In 1956, he moved to New York City where he began photographing musicians and other city dwellers. His work is often compared to the Depression-era photograher, Walker Evans, for its raw and simple depictions of everyday life. Typically using black and white photography, Friedlander captures ordinary scenes with subtle documentary qualities. In 1960, the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded Friedlander his first grant. In 1963 the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House gave Friedlander his first solo museum show. Four years later, Friedlander had gained such recognition that in 1967 he participated in the revolutionary photography exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City entitled, New Documents. Friedlander was exhibited alongside Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus. In 1969 he collaborated with the pop painter, Jim Dine, to create the Work From the Same House. The two artist collectively published a series of prints with one of Friedlander's photographs alongside an etching by Dine.
