AIthough he was born in French Indo- China, Hoi is a thoroughly Westernized Oriental. He has, in his art, combined the best of both worlds-the poetic tranquility of the East with the vibrancy and excitement of the West.
His landscape lithographs illustrate this in- tegration of cultures. In creating a landscape, Hoi chooses natural forms which are Occi- dental-the trees are poplars, elms and scrub pine; the animals are deer, dogs and foxes. But behind these images run large areas of pure bright color-saffron yellows, moss greens, carmine reds-the colors of the Orient. The total effect is of lyricism and poetry infused with strength.
Hoi has been steeped in the traditional art forms of his country. His family introduced him to art early in childhood, and seeing a positive response in the young boy, aged his artistic ambitions from the age of 10. Hoi's success is just beginning, but already his work, and particularly his lithograph, are being sought after by gallery owners and private individuals.
