Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, better known by his pseudonym Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-French architect, urban planner, and painter who became one of the most influential pioneers of modern architecture. Born in Switzerland in 1887, he moved to Paris in 1917, where he developed his revolutionary “Five Points of Architecture” that advocated for pilotis, free plan design, and roof gardens. His philosophy viewed the home as a “machine for living,” leading to iconic residential masterpieces such as the Villa Savoye in Poissy. Beyond individual buildings he formulated ambitious urban planning concepts, including the Radiant City, which sought to transform modern cities through high-density vertical living surrounded by green space. In his later career, he shifted toward sculptural, expressive concrete forms, exemplified by the dramatic Chapel of Notre-Dame du Haut in Ronchamp and his master plan for Chandigarh, India. He passed away in 1965, and today seventeen of his architectural projects across seven countries are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites, reflecting his monumental impact on early 20th Century design.
Cassina is an iconic Italian furniture manufacturer founded in 1927 by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda, Italy. Initially focused on traditional woodworking, the company pioneered post-war industrial design by introducing advanced mass-production technologies. During the 1950s Cassina expanded its influence through high-profile interior commissions such as custom furnishings for luxury ocean liners like the Andrea Doria, and established successful collaborations with visionary architect Gio Ponti. A major turning point occurred in 1964 when the brand acquired exclusive reproduction rights to the furniture of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand, establishing its celebrated I Maestri (Masters) Collection. Over the decades, the company has partnered with ground-breaking designers like Mario Bellini, Vico Magistretti, and Gaetano Pesce, yielding world-famous icons such as the Cab chair and the Maralunga sofa. Today, operating under the artistic direction of Patricia Urquiola, Cassina continues to define contemporary Italian luxury design while preserving their historical legacy.
