Late 19th Century Middletown Plate Co. Mary Gregory Teal Blue Cameo Desert Plate. Antique silver handled desert or cake plate with teal blue cameo sculpture in bowl depicting a young girl and bird in a flowering field. On four tapered feet.

The Middletown Plate Company—also known under names like Middletown Silver Company and Middlesex Silver Company—was founded in Middletown, Connecticut, in 1864, and became known for producing silver-plated wares such as flatware, holloware, pitchers, and serving pieces made from nickel silver or “quadruple plate.” This term referred to items with multiple layers of silver plating for added durability and luster. In 1898, the company was absorbed into the newly formed International Silver Company (ISC), although it continued to use its original maker’s marks until around 1921. Middletown Plate Co. products often featured intricate Victorian and Edwardian designs, and were typically marked with the company’s name or stamped with terms like “quadruple plate” or “hard white metal.” Today, their silverplate items—such as tea sets, trays, and serving pieces—are collectible for their craftsmanship, ornate detailing, and place in American silver manufacturing history.
