Lars Bo was born in Kolding, Denmark on May 29th, 1924, and studied with P. Rostrup Bøyesen at Statens Museum for Kunst in 1939 before enrolling at the Danish Design School in 1941. In 1942 he left his studies to join the Danish resistance against the German occupation during World War II, when he first began writing short stories to cope with the horrors of fighting. He moved to Paris after the war and worked in Johnny Friedläender and Albert Flocons graphic studio, where his graphic works with surrealistically inspired fantastic motifs earned him the nickname “Wizard.” His first novel, Det vidunderlige hus i Paris (“The Wonderful House in Paris”) was partially based on his experiences, and led him to a successful career as writer as well as illustrator of children’s books. He began making prints in the 1950s at Atelier 17 under Stanley William Hayter, and continued to make aquatints and etchings for exhibitions in England, the United States, and Japan right up until his death on October 21st, 1999.
