Spectacular Mexican 'Tree of Life' pottery candelabra, polychrome folk art. Condition: minor loss in blackened area (see photo), a few drips of wax in areas.
The Tree of Life has roots that reach far back into pre-Columbian Mexico, starting with The World Tree, a pre-Columbian motif found across various Indigenous cultures in Mexico. With the arrival of Europeans, Catholic friars looked for ways to Christianize indigenous practices in an effort to evangelize the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. The Tree of Life, having similarities to The World Tree, was originally used for teaching the Biblical story of creation. Overtime, Tree of Life sculptures became a cultural and commercial craft heavily associated with central Mexico.
