The Hmong people are a distinct ethnic minority group with origins in China, although prior to the Qing Dynasty they were considered part of the “Miao” cultural group, with apocryphal tales of their fierceness as roaming barbarians stretching back to around 2300 BC. In the 1970s the term emerged to describe a specific subset which had migrated southward into Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar during the tumultuous 20th Century, eventually experiencing a diaspora after the Vietnam War that brought many to the United States, France, Australia, and even South America. They are one of China’s 56 officially recognized nationalities, and have subdivisions within their own culture that are tied to clothing, specifically the colors of garments worn by female members of the communities. Today these vibrant hues, combined with ritualistic dances and animalist beliefs, are some of the few remaining aspects of their original way of life as they have begun to integrate into modern global societies, with varying degrees of success.
