From ancient antiquity the vast number of herbal remedies in Asian cultures required an extensive storage system, and apothecary cabinets (also known as medicine chests) were commonly used in pharmacies and homes throughout the continent. Primarily made of wood and lighter, more malleable materials, few survive from early dynasties, but they reached the height of their popularity in the early Qing period (1644-1912) when Western cultures began to import them as well, repurposing them for jewelry and other storage needs.
