Kerry Hallam was born in Derbyshire, Northern England on March 12th, 1937. He attended Chesterfield Art College for two years, then London University’s Central College of Art on a scholarship, where he studied under mentors such as Leslie Cole, Patrick Heron, and Hans Tisdale, developing a love of Impressionism. After completing his military service in the Gurkha Brigade in Hong Kong and Malaya, he returned to England to pursue art full-time, with his first major recognition coming when he was included in Britain’s Royal Society of Artists in Watercolor in 1965. He began recording music as well as writing, and traveled to the South of France extensively for inspiration, drawing upon the works of Cezanne, van Gogh, and Matisse to hone his own visual style. His Fauv-inspired works were soon displayed in galleries throughout Europe, with touring one-man exhibitions taking him to Paris, Tokyo, New York, Hong Kong, San Francisco, and more. In 1981 he moved to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, where he opened his own studio and gallery, with his works thereafter found in many American travel magazines and produced exclusively through Chalk & Vermilion Fine Arts in Connecticut. He died on November 2nd, 2020, leaving behind an extensive artistic legacy on several continents.
