Keith’s Use of the Globes 1828. This book is titled “A New Treatise On The Use Of The Globes, Or A Philosophical View Of The Earth And Heavens: Comprehending An Account Of The Figure, Magnitude, And Motion Of The Earth; With The Natural Changes Of Its Surface, Caused By Floods, Earthquakes &c. Together With The Principles Of Meteorology, And Astronomy; With The Theory Of The Tides &c. Preceded By an Extensive Selection Of Astronomical , And other Definitions; And illustrated By A Great Variety Of Problems, Questions For The Examination Of The Student, &c &c. Designed For The Instruction Of Youth”. It was written by Thomas Keith and is a new edition published in London by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, And Green in 1828 and printed in London by A. &. R. Spottiswoode. The covers are full best crushed French levant, with six decorative horizontal bands in gilt and gilt lettering and gilt devices on the spine, wide gilt dentelles on the covers, marbled endpapers, the title page, an eight-page Preface (iii - x), Contents pages that run from xi - xxiii, 359 pages of text, one leaf of ads for Books Written by the Author and sold by the publishers after the last page of text, and six fold-out copper plates at the end of the book. Thomas Keith (1759 - 1824) was born in Brandesburton, near Yorkshire, England. After his father died, he came to London and taught mathematics and wrote mathematical books; in 1804 he was appointed secretary to the master of the king’s household, in 1810 he was made professor of geography to Princess Charlotte of Wales, and he also taught the Princess Sophia Matilda. In 1814 he was appointed accountant to the British Museum, and he was heavily involved in astronomical research on the planets and globes. The book was first published in 1805 and was so popular it was published in at least twenty-five editions by 1875, and the contents include illustrations of the real and apparent paths of the earth around the sun, tables and illustrations related to constellations, chapters on the planets and comets, Saturn’s rings, lunar eclipses, the latitude and longitude of the moon and stars, over one hundred astronomical problems (I - CII), the copper plates show globes with lines of latitude and longitude, eclipses, the seasons, heights of objects on the earth’s surface, the path of Jupiter and the magnitude of stars, a telescope design, and all this well before the advent of modern telescopes and technology. The book measures 6 3/4 x 4 1/4 in. wide and is in very good condition. The binding is tight, the pages and text are clean, with just faint brown spots here and there, light rubbing at the heel and crown and at the tips, a small blemish on the front cover, the copper plates are in great condition, with no holes or tears, just brown spots on some of the plates, there are a few penciled notes or answers after some of the questions or problems that were posed, and a very attractive book overall. #167 #4984
