Keith Haring (1958–1990) was an American artist and social activist whose bold, graphic style became one of the defining visual languages of 1980s street culture. Emerging from the New York City subway scene, Haring gained recognition for his chalk drawings on unused advertising panels, featuring radiant babies, barking dogs, and dynamic human figures rendered in thick black lines and vibrant colors. His work addressed themes such as love, unity, consumerism, apartheid, and the AIDS crisis, blending accessibility with urgent political commentary. Haring collaborated with artists and performers including Madonna and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and he founded the Keith Haring Foundation to support children’s programs and HIV/AIDS awareness. Though his life was cut short by AIDS-related complications, his art remains globally influential for its immediacy, optimism, and commitment to social change.
