Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was one of Japan’s most celebrated ukiyo-e artists and a master of woodblock printmaking, renowned for his innovative compositions, dynamic linework, and fascination with nature. Born in Edo (present-day Tokyo), he worked under numerous names and explored an extraordinary range of subjects, including landscapes, kabuki actors, beautiful women, animals, and everyday life. His most famous series, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, includes the iconic Under the Wave off Kanagawa (often called The Great Wave), which became a defining image of Japanese art. Hokusai’s later series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo further demonstrated his experimental use of perspective, unusual viewpoints, and vivid color. His work had a profound influence on European artists in the nineteenth century and helped inspire the Japonisme movement, making him one of the most influential Japanese artists in the history of Western art.
