This small book is titled "Kate Greenaway's Almanack for 1927", published by Frederick Warne in Great Britain, and it is a first edition because there is just a single date for the book. The covers have a pictorial design with a leaf motif surrounding the design. The spine is honey colored and the yellow endpapers have a small typed note on the front paste-down which reads "The coloured illustrations are the actual first printing of the 1891 Almanack. The text for the year 1927 is now inserted.", all the illustrations are in color, the half-title says "Almanack for 1927", there are 24 pages in the book and the book is unpaginated. The last page also has a circular logo which says "London, Engraved & Printed at Racquet Court by Edmund Evans". Catherine Greenaway (1846 - 1901), better known as Kate Greenaway, was an English Victorian artist and writer, known for her children's book illustrations. She received her education in graphic design and art between 1858 and 1871 and began her career designing Christmas and Valentine's cards for the holiday card market. In 1879 wood-block engraver and printer Edmund Evans printed "Under the Window", Kate's first children's picture book and an instant best-seller - it sold over 100,000 copies - and her collaboration with Evans continued throughout the 1880's and 1890's. The depiction of children in imaginary 18th-century costumes in a Queen Anne style was extremely popular in England and around the world, and In the 1880's, the most popular designers of bookplates were Greenaway, along with Walter Crane and Aubrey Beardsley. Their work exhibited intricate art nouveau elements with flowing vines and floral patterns, and at the time, her only rivals for children's book illustration were Crane and Randolph Caldecott, so she was in good company. When Greenaway was very young, her father accepted a commission to provide the illustrations to a new edition of Charles Dickens's The Pickwick Papers, so art was in the family as well. The book measures 4 1/4 x 3 in. wide, the calendar pages and season pages are pretty clean, while the covers are lightly soiled, with rounded corners and a scratch on the back cover. The front flyleaf has a vertical crease on the right side and the gutter has light wear in front, the rear gutter has wear along the edge, and we could only find three copies of this almanack listed on the rare book website we use, so for all the Kate Greenaway lovers, the book is scarce and hard to find. #37 #7028 Location Book Box 3
