Karen Rankin (1944-2022) American, Hand Carved and Painted Wood Uncle Sam Figure. The long-legged young patriotic figure has a wiener dog on a leash accompanying him. Signed and dated 1992.

Karen Lee Rankin was born in Perry, Iowa on June 19th, 1944, and studied at Omaha Art School before becoming a commercial artist working in the advertising departments at Younkers in Des Moines. After meeting her husband Morry Mandelbaum there they moved their family to Denver, Colorado in the early 1970s, where she worked for Joslins until the late 80s. She began to explore other forms of art, expressing herself through home decoration, watercolor painting, personalized greeting cards, and eventually moved back to Iowa where she worked with Wolf Creek Woodworking, gaining national recognition for her hand-carved and hand-painted whimsical wooden figures with patriotic, holiday, and circus themes. She died at her home in Urbandale on August 28th, 2022.
