Gibran, a Lebanese painter and sculptor from Boston, first received acclaim as a realistic painter and turned to sculpture in the mid-fifties. A cousin to the famed author Kahlil Gibran, ("The Prophet"), he prided himself on his multiple interest and skills with painting, wood, wax, stone & welding. Nureyev (1938-1993) was a Soviet-born ballet dancer and choreographer who was regarded as the greatest male ballet dancer of his generation. Beginning at the Kirov Ballet, his defection created an international sensation. He went on to be an international guest artist before becoming the director of the Paris Opera Ballet in 1983.
