Oil on canvas mounted on board. Overall Size: 18 1/2 x 14 in. Sight Size: 12 1/2 x 5 in. #1176 . Junius Sloan is known for Landscape, portrait, and genre painting. Sloan was an itinerant artist who was constantly on the move. From 1848 he painted landscapes and portraits in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Illinois. Born in Kingsville, Ohio, Junius Sloan was entirely self taught as an artist. In 1848, he began a career as an itinerant portrait painter and traveled in Ohio, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. In 1857, he moved to New York City and shared a studio with Julian Edward Bryant (1836-1865), a nephew of William Cullen Bryant. Although Sloan considered himself primarily a portrait painter, he was well aware of the Hudson River School painters and was a particular friend of Cincinnati landscape painter, Robert S. Duncanson.
