Jules Gachet was born in 1859 in Échallens, Switzerland. Little is known of the early life of this Swiss impressionist artist, although it is likely he was related to Paul-Ferdinand Gachet (1828-1909), the artist and physician who attended to Van Gogh and other prominent artists of the day who suffered from mental illness. Jules spent some time in Paris, painting alongside various Montparnasse artists in the 1880s before returning to Switzerland, where he continued his studies under various artists in Geneva. He is best known for his exquisitely detailed paintings of Lake Geneva and Ticino, as well as beautiful depictions of the borderlands with the Tyrol region and Lichtenstein. He is listed in the Benezit Dictionary of Artists, and eventually settled in Nyon, where he died in 1914 less than a month shy of his 55th birthday.
