Judith Ripka was born August 24th, 1946 in New York City, and developed an early passion for art and design from her couturier mother, pursuing a degree in art history at Hunter College and fine arts at New York University. In the 1970s she began experimenting with jewelry-making, gaining recognition quickly around Manhattan for her aesthetic approach, and launched Judith Ripka Jewelry in 1977. Her works won the De Beers Award for Outstanding Jewelry in 1983 for combining vibrant gemstones with intricate silver and gold metalwork, and her necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more were worn by numerous celebrities and sold directly through QVC after forming a partnership with them in 1997. After her brand was acquired by Xcel Brands Inc. in 2014 for approximately $22.5 million she left QVC five years later, and now focuses on promoting and empowering aspiring female designers and artists.
