Joseph Taylor Voorhees, Jr. was born in Los Angeles, California in 1937. He attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and quickly got work directing television commercials. He worked in the film and television industry for the next forty years, while pursuing fishing, gardening, traveling, and other hobbies. In 1978 he met and married his wife, Irma, with whom he had two sons. She encouraged him to pursue two of his other hobbies: photography and painting. By the mid 1980s he had won several awards for his watercolors, and was exhibiting them frequently in local galleries. In the late 1990s Joseph began to suffer from the spread of lung cancer, and he and Irma retired to San Ramon for his health. He passed away after a long battle with the disease on June 17th, 2010, leaving behind a vast body of rural scenes and intimate close-ups in his self-taught realistic style. His son Vince helped Irma compile an art book of his work the following year, and a retrospective was shown at his alma mater in Pasadena from 2015 to 2016.
