Joseph Stubbs, a Staffordshire potter baptized in 1786, built a career deeply intertwined with the American export trade through various short-lived partnerships. After a brief 1816 venture in Boston and Philadelphia, he returned to England to take over a Longport pottery works previously managed by his father, Benjamin. By 1822 he had formed the firm Stubbs & Kent, where his partner Thomas Kent traveled to the United States to personally oversee their expanding commerce. The business became well known for producing dark blue printed earthenware featuring American-themed designs. Following Kent’s sudden death at sea in 1828, Stubbs continued the business under the joint name for several years despite his own declining health. He eventually attempted to auction his molds and engravings in 1834 before passing away in 1836, at which point the factory was leased to Thomas Mayer.
