Joseph Neary was born in New York and spent his early years sailing and fishing along the Eastern seacoast. While still a young man, he and his family moved to California's Monterey Peninsula. Life along the seacoast inspired Neary's first paintings. Joseph Neary's powerful paintings reflect his experience as a competitive sailor, and his keen eye for the windswept restlessness of the ocean and shore-lines of New England and Northern California.

In 1979 Joseph Neary captured the hearts of wine lovers and critics alike with his painting of "Sea-Wolf at the Lighthouse" for Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series. The Chicago Tribune wrote, "There was a time when the contents of a wine bottle was what sold it. Now what's on the bottle is turning heads." USA Today wrote, "The next time you buy a bottle of wine, you may be tempted to frame it before it ever reaches your cellar."
