Joseph Demarais (1927–1971) was an American printmaker, sculptor, and educator known for his innovative three-dimensional and color intaglio prints. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, Demarais initially pursued a career in music, serving in the U.S. Army band during World War II and earning a master's degree in music theory in 1948. In the late 1950s, he shifted his focus to art, studying at Miami University in Ohio starting in 1960. Over a prolific seven-year career, Demarais developed a unique "intaglio-relief" method, combining intaglio and relief printing techniques using materials like acetate, copper, masonite, and zinc to create textured surfaces. His work often depicted themes of human struggle and migration, employing earth tones to portray forms such as rotund nudes. Demarais exhibited in over 100 exhibitions across the U.S. and Europe, and his works are held in collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the U.S. Department of State. He passed away in New York City in 1971 at the age of 44.
