Josefina Aguilar (Born 1945) is a Mexican sculptor from Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca, renowned for her vibrant clay figurines called muñecas. Trained by her parents, she creates detailed depictions of everyday village life, religious and folkloric scenes, and iconic figures, primarily in red clay. Her family’s works are carefully dried, fired in rustic kilns, and hand-painted, with many pieces lost in the process. Discovered by Nelson Rockefeller in 1975, her art gained international recognition, enabling her to secure the clay source for her family’s studio. Considered the matriarch of the Aguilar artistic lineage, she continues to create with her sons’ assistance after going blind in 2014. Her pieces are held in collections including the Museum of International Folk Art, Mexic-Arte Museum, San Antonio Museum of Art, and the Mexican Museum in San Francisco.
