Tonalist interior scene of a peasant woman sewing by the light of a window. Fine Dutch oil on cradle panel with label verso stating: 'I herewith declare that this is a good example of my work - painted in 1903 or 1904' (initialed) J.I. Josef Israels was the leader of the Hague school of peasant genre painting, which flourished in the Netherlands between 1860 and 1900. Besides oils, Israels worked in watercolours and was an etcher of the first rank. His later works in all media express a tragic sense of life and are generally treated in broad masses of light and shade. His painting style was influenced by Rembrandt’s later works, and, like Rembrandt, Israels often painted the poor Jews of the Dutch ghettos This painting is In fine condition; overall crackle pattern most noticeable on woman's skirt. Signed lower left. Overall size: 22 x 18 1/2 in. Sight size: 12 1/2 x 9 in. Please note that all sales are final. No refunds will be given under any circumstances.
