Jose David (1909-1990) Filipino, Oil on Canvas Landscape. Signed lower left. Men riding water buffalo. Born on July 26, 1909, in Mexico, Pampanga, Philippines, Jose Bumanlag David emerged from a rural Kapampangan milieu where artistic pursuits often clashed with societal expectations. His formative years unfolded amid local schools—Mexico Elementary, San Fernando Intermediate, and Pampanga High School, from which he graduated in 1929—nurturing an early aptitude evidenced by medals in inter-school art contests. David's rigorous training culminated at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts, where he earned his degree in 1934, honing skills in portraiture and historical tableau that would define his oeuvre amid the Philippine Commonwealth's cultural awakening.
