Jose Chavez Morado was born in Silao, Mexico on January 4, 1909. He began his training from an early age in his family library, focusing on history, science and poetry. At the age of 16 he emigrated to the United States where he developed a special interest in set design. In 1930 he entered the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles and then studied on a grant at Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas., experimenting with techniques that were later established as "action painting." In 1931 his education continued at the National School of Fine Arts where he approached engraving, painting and lithography. He came to be known as a painter, engraver, sharp caricaturist, muralist, teacher of plastic arts, and a promoter of Mexican-American culture through the founding of museums and institutions. His work is recognized for the inclusion of geometric and lyrical elements, and was considered revolutionary for depicting women, especially indigenous women, in vigorous movement and heightened activity, as opposed to static portraiture. He died in Guanajuato on December 2, 2002.
