Jorge Mayol was born on a cattle ranch outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1948. As a child he took to sketching flowers, trees and horses, and his early art instruction was from his father who was an accomplished draftsman. Mayol later worked with Axel Amuchastegui, an Argentinean bird painter who introduced Mayol to his gallery in London and took him on as a gallery artist. Mayol painted birds, small animals, and African images for the British clientele starting in the 1970s. His work began selling in the United States in the mid 80s, and in 1990 Mayol emigrated to northern California to research animals such as bears and wolves that are more familiar to the U.S. market. He continues to paint and make prints of his works to this day, and his pieces have been exhibited regularly in New York, Milan, Tokyo, and in public and corporate collections around the globe.
